Frontiers

Jerry Goldsmith has tackled, and excelled in all genres of film and TV, but there is no denying his work in the field of Sci-Fi and fantasy has spawned some of his finest music. Frontiers is a compilation of genre themes recorded in September 97 with the impressive Royal Scottish National Orchestra, often utilised by Varese to make numerous re-recordings of older film scores. Of course re-recording Goldsmith music without the original scores' bells and whistles often means the re-recorded versions lack the same power and presence, but hats off to all involved here as the majority sounds mightily impressive.

The album kicks off with the stately end credit from First Contact featuring the original theme and a fine performance of the beautiful new First Contact theme. The rousing Twilight Zone overture follows and makes for a great concert piece, with three of the four themes impressively showcased, as well as a slightly alternate take of Nightmare At 20,000 Feet.

Goldsmith's startling main theme to Capricorn One demands a good performance from an Orchestra and thankfully since the awful LSO performance heard in concert back in 1989, this piece is a lot more refined now, edging closer to the power of the official album re-recording made by the National Philharmonic Orchestra.

Two cues from the 70's Sci-Fi adventure Logan's Run are up next and considering the relatively dull sounding original recording, makes these selections especially welcome. Not surprisingly Goldsmith rolls out the score highlights and almost makes this the reason to buy the CD.

The quirky Illustrated Man follows with it's Folksy main theme and even features the haunting vocal performance. Again the modern recording quality makes this an interesting inclusion but doesn't mask the low key nature of the score.

The breathtaking Enterprise flyover follows from the legendary Star Trek The Motion Picture, a genuine piece of space ballet and a major moment in Goldsmith's ground breaking score. In contrast the robust action score to Total Recall is served up next but demands to be heard in its original soundtrack form. You just can't replace the electronics that Goldsmith combined with Orchestra on the original soundtrack, consequently this version suffers with the musicians having far to much to do.

Damnation Alley remains one of many unreleased, and much sort after Goldsmith scores, and with the tapes missing will probably never be released. So it is especially exciting to find two cues included here. Goldsmith serves up the ominous main theme, and in contrast the beautiful end credit, both performed well enough to send a tingle down the spine!

The penultimate selection is further music from the world of Star Trek and the elegant theme for the TV series Voyager. Again perfect concert fare and easily mastered for re-recording. While the end title selection from Goldsmith's classic score from Alien fittingly closes this excellent album.
