Jerry Goldsmith's first score
for the new millennium finally hits the streets. Its been a long
wait but well worth it delivering the kind of score the summer
2000 season is in desperate need of. Full of the trade mark sonics
that have come to define the Goldsmith - Verhoeven partnership,
it delivers the requisite atmosphere for the director's dark
sci-fi thriller. Electronics return to the fore but with a harsh
and unrelenting orchestral undercurrent supporting the dramatic
suspense while thematic material is kept to the minimum. As the
score builds to the requisite explosive finale, orchestra takes
over juxtaposed with some inspired screaming string effects to
round out classic Goldsmith tension and excitement. No major
action set pieces to talk of but the magic lies with the stop-start
suspenseful moments highlighted by cool piano and brash horns.
A score that you probably won't warm to immediately but there's
no denying that Goldsmith consistently makes this powerful score
very a great listen.
Expanded review to follow.
