The
Last Castle
Goldsmith's first and probably
only new score for 2001 is a surprisingly low key affair and
some what ineffective here on a 30 minute CD selection. Although
haunting trumpet solo and restrained percussion seem at odds
with the electronic pulses, Goldsmith's 'Ramboesque' theme
is nonetheless perfectly judged and cannot fail to create the
correct dramatic affect. The remainder of the score varies the
theme slightly before hinting at action and suspense but disappointingly
these elements are few and far between and a little under developed.
A curiously low key score and not the patriotic action thriller
we thought it would be.
Although Decca's album looks fine and some nice notes from director
Lurie are good to see, there is a mastering fault on early Discs
with distortion running in the background of most of the cues! A replacement
disc can be sourced from Decca.
