Tadlow Re-record QBVII - 2 CD Set

Tadlow has announced the third in their series of re-recordings of Jerry Goldsmith scores. Following on from Hour Of The Gun and The Salamander we now have a re-recording of his 1974 Emmy winning score to the TV epic QBVII. Their interpretation spans 2 discs and runs for an impressive 95 minutes! The original Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack album, previously released on CD by Intrada, is out of print. And it is assumed the original tapes for the full score are lost as it was recorded in Italy.

Jerry Goldsmith's emotional score has a number of highlights; that include a rousing brass led fanfare, some classic Goldsmith action, a melancholy love theme that is a real heart breaker, the chilling music for the concentration camp and last but not least the powerhouse chorale finale. One of Jerry Goldsmith's finest works.

Order from Tadlow now. Ships 18th December.

Star Trek Nemesis Deluxe Edition And Runaway Encore!

Varese Sarabande will release a 2 CD deluxe edition presentation of Jerry Goldsmith's final Star Trek score Nemesis. With this release we now have all of Jerry Goldsmith's full Star Trek scores available for the first time. The CD set will be available to order from Monday 9th December from the Varese CD Club page.

The darkest of all of the original Trek films; Goldsmith provided a suitably menacing score focussing on the Romulan threat. But the original Goldsmith Trek theme gets a workout too and there are handful of energetic Goldsmith action cues to savour here as well. The complete score is featured along with a generous selection of alternates.

Also released is a re-issue of Runaway under the Varese Encore branding. This is the full score released back in 2006 as a deluxe edition. Goldsmith's first of three all electronic scores is his best and features a very stylish action thriller score that although performed on synthesiser sounds like it could easily be orchestrated and performed by a full orchestra. An interesting experiment and worth adding to your collection if you missed it.

With the news that the CD Club is back we now look forward to 2014 and the hope some of Jerry Goldsmith's most popular scores from the 90s that were previously released by Varese will now get similar treatment to Nemesis.

Thank you Varese and thanks to all the labels who have released Jerry Goldsmith soundtracks this year. Best wishes to everyone for the holiday season and happy new year!

Alien Nation Re-issue

Kritzerland has announced a re-issue of Jerry Goldsmith's un-used score to the 1988 sci-fi thriller Alien Nation. The score was previously released by Varese Sarabande under the CD Club banner. That disc sold out some time ago. So, for those who missed it - grab it while you can as it's limited to just 1200 copies!

The score was the 2nd of three all electronic works the composer wrote back in the late 80s. The exact reasons for its rejection have never really been confirmed. Supposedly a re-edit of the film meant it no longer fitted and the composer was unable, or unwilling to return to re-score. But a lot the score still seems to fit numerous scenes.

The 2 disc set also includes the Curt Sobel re-score as a bonus.

Sebastian From Intrada!

Intrada announce their full release of Jerry Goldsmith's Sebastian soundtrack. The CD contains the stereo album content as per the original DOT LP plus amazingly the full film soundtrack! Although this is not surprisingly mono it remains an incredible bonus considering the obscurity of the film and score. To round off is all the Tristram Cary Sputnik Code demos. An amazing release!

Goldsmith's period pop score captures the mood of swinging 60's London and the odd nature of the daft movie which can't seem to decide whether it's a comedy, cold war spy thriller or romantic drama. It remains one of a handful of bizarre assignments Goldsmith worked on during his long career.

The UK Harkit label released a version of the album some years ago using an LP source and adding the extra Tristram Cary Sputnik Code demos. Many consider this a boot CD and not properly licensed. But now we have the real deal. A proper release using the recently located album master and full score properly licensed for sale courtesy of those patient people at Intrada.

A Step Out Of Line DVD Release

A rare and obscure 1971 JG scored urban crime drama comes to DVD from CBS - A Step Out Of Line. The film was a TV movie so is in 4:3 with a solid picture and good clean mono sound. A rare opportunity to hear JG's short but effective score to picture.

The film tells the story of three friends living in San Francisco who find themselves with money problems for different reasons and see an opportunity to steal $100s of $1000s in cash from a bank. Peter Falk's character's Insurance company insures the bank in question.Try and Order from Amazon or Ebay as it may no longer be available from the usual outlets.

Poltergeist II - 2 CD Set From Kritzerland

Kritzerland has announced a special 2 CD set release of Jerry Goldsmith's score from Poltergeist II The Other Side. This will be the fourth incarnation of the soundtrack but it is now complete for the first time. Though the remaining extra music is relatively short the set does have a number of intriguing bonus tracks to entice fans.

Goldsmith had moved on somewhat from his majestic Oscar nominated first score when it came to the 1986 sequel. But it didn't mean the composer was any less inspired, introducing a number of new themes alongside his beautiful theme for Carol Anne. The centre piece was a mystical and elegant theme for the Indian Taylor, a wonderfully touching theme for Carol Anne's Grand Ma and a chilling theme for the ultra creepy Preacher Kane. Also new was some typically propulsive Goldsmith action scoring and the icing on the cake; some choral passages recalling Goldsmith's legendary Omen scoring style. However, this time it was all based on an actual hymn rather than original lyrics and featured the choir chanting "God Is In His Holy Temple" that sends shivers down the spine.

Kritzerland promise improved sound quality over the previous releases, in particular reverb that affected the choral passages. The new release has started a war of words with Doug Fake's Intrada and Kritzerland's Bruce Kimmel over the use of the 3 track mix downs which Intrada say were not intended as a source for the soundtrack. But Kritzerland say this sounds superior to the original digital master that was used on the previous releases. Fans, who know doubt have all the other releases can now make their own decision. But hurry as the new release is limited to just 1500 copies!

Kritzerland reveal they have another Goldsmith title due in October and another due in 2014!

The Other - Twilight Time Blu-ray Due

Watch out for a new Blu-ray from Twilight Time in October. The film features an isolated score option.

The film is a rather subtle horror with a nice creepy twist and features a nuanced 70's Goldsmith horror score that combines a sweet but melancholy central theme as well as perfectly judged chills. The film has only appeared in Europe on DVD.

Star Trek Insurrection Expanded CD Due

GNP Crescendo has finally revealed the release date for their expanded CD of Jerry Goldsmith's score for Star Trek Insurrection. The disc is due August 6th and will be available to order direct from their website.

The disc will feature the film version cues plus extras but will not include the album versions of cues. Apparently GNP still hold a lot of the old Insurrection CDs so it was clearly not cost effective to make this a two CD set, like their release of Star Trek Generations. So fans will need to keep hold of their original Crescendo Star Trek CD. Or also order that one too for completeness!

Rio Conchos Re-issue From Intrada

Intrada has re-issued their superlative 1989 re-recording of Rio Conchos they made with Jerry Goldsmith and The London Symphony Orchestra with a small amount of extra music. Arguably the finest sounding Jerry Goldsmith recording there is.

Jerry Goldsmith made a rare journey down memory lane and re-recorded near on the entire score for one of his early westerns. The score features the composer's memorable south of the border flavours, a strong main theme, powerhouse action,  suspense and warmth and melancholy. A perfect Goldsmith score!

This re-issue includes the short missing End Cast music that the composer clearly decided not to end the album with back in 89, as well as an alternate of the exhilarating action cue Wall Of Fire. Plus a first take of the end cast with room chat from Goldsmith and engineer Bruce Botnick.

Of course the album also includes the composer's stunningly moving and supremely beautiful prologue music for The Agony And The Ecstasy, written for the film's road show performance.

Inchon 2 CD Set Re-issue From Intrada

Intrada has re-issued their two CD presentation of Jerry Goldsmith's lengthy and impressive war score to the ill-fated 1980 Korean war drama Inchon. The expensive film essentially dealt with the aftermath of the North Korean invasion and actually ended with the initial skirmish at Inchon harbour and perhaps was not the film it should have been.

The set features the Jerry Goldsmith produced album on one disc and the complete score on the second disc. The set was originally released back in 2006 but limited to just 1500 copies. Not surprisingly this sold out quite quickly. Now fans who missed it can now get hold of this excellent set. This edition is unlimited and is no different from the 2006 release in terms of sound quality or packaging.

Bandolero! Re-issue And The Challenge Replacement

La-La Land Records has announced they are re-issuing Jerry Goldsmith's 60's western score Bandolero! The score was previously released in full and with a stunning mix by Intrada back in 2004, announced on the day the composer tragically passed away. That disc was limited to just 1500 copies and quickly sold out. La-La Land promise improved sound, but let's hope it sounds just as stunning as Intrada's disc, plus a bonus version of the main title sans whistling. The disc comes with stunning new front cover artwork. The disc is limited to 2000 copies.

Also from La-La Land will be their replacement disc of The Challenge. Let's hope they have sorted out all the issues with this release and it is now perfect. Replacements will be automatically sent out to those who purchased the first disc.

The Detective And Von Ryan's Express CD

Intrada continue their Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack onslaught with another stunning CD release. This time the complete scores from two 60's Frank Sinatra hits.

The Detective was a very gritty and controversial thriller for the time and involved murder in the shunned New York gay community, as well as dealing with Police brutality and corruption. Goldsmith turned in another of his sparse but effective scores, this time Jazz based weaving itself around the uncomfortable drama and relationship between Sinatra's character and his wife played by Lee. Remick.

Von Ryan's Express was a thrilling WWII action adventure set around a prison break from Italy and the taking of the German train that was to transport them. Goldsmith delivered an up to the minute war score that delivered the orchestral action and thrills along with a modern 60's slant that emphasised Goldsmith's cutting edge rhythmic scoring style.

Both scores were in part featured on the Varese Jerry Goldsmith At 20th Century Fox Box set and Von Ryan's featured as an isolated track on a special edition DVD. But are now presented together, and in stereo. Except for a couple of cues on Von Ryan's Express. These cues suffered from significant 'wow' and can still be heard on the isolated DVD track.

Breakheart Pass Re-issued By Kritzerland

Kritzerland has announced a short 1000 copies run of Jerry Goldsmith' score to the western thriller Breakheart Pass. The score has previously been released by La-La Land Records but has been out of print for a while. Kritzerland use the same mono master but sweeten the deal and put current owners in a quandary by including a small amount of extra music. Though one cue is just a film edit of two previously released cues but heard in the film. The other is the second half of the cue called "Here They Come" but taken from the Dialogue/Music/Effects track. CDs ship third week of May

Tadlow Announce Re-recording Of The Salamander

The Salamander is one of a number of Jerry Goldsmith scores that never had a soundtrack release at the time of the film. And sadly by the looks will never be released due to lost tapes. So this re-recording of the complete score courtesy of James Fitzpatrick's specialist film music label Tadlow is a very welcome and exciting release for Goldsmith fans.

Even the film score manuscripts appear lost too so the whole thing has been re-constructed from the ear of composer and orchestrator Leigh Philips, himself a Jerry Goldsmith fanatic and more than worthy of achieving this feat. The score is performed by the City Of Prague Philharmonic and chorus under the baton of Nic Raine.

Jerry Goldsmith delivered another score worthy of a better film. It is classic Goldsmith thriller scoring with requisite action and suspense along with a beautiful and glorious love theme as well as a suitably unique Goldsmith main theme.

The album also includes a suite from The Cassandra Crossing and especially exciting; a re-recording of two cues from Ransom.

Seven Days In May From Intrada

Another ultra rare 60's Goldsmith film score makes its debut on CD and in stereo! Jerry Goldsmith's brief 15 minute score to Seven Days In May was in stark contrast to a rejected full score from composer David Amram, who had collaborated with John Frakenheimer before on The Manchurian Candidate.

The book Torn Scores by Gergely Hubai makes mention of the rejection and reveals it was the film's producer who didn't like his music. It appears the film was to be essentially released without any music but clearly someone felt a minimalist score would serve a purpose. And a young Jerry Goldsmith turned in just that. A short percussion work featuring piano, marimba, xylophone, snares and tympani. In the scheme of things it may not be one of the composer's major works but nonetheless proved a key dramatic element of the film and lead to two further collaborations with the film's director (Seconds and The Challenge).

The short running time obviously meant it would need to be partnered with another score. Sadly the obvious choice of including the Amram score could not happen due to the fact the score's rights are owned by the composer himself and not the studio. So Intrada have included another stereo premiere in the form of the Maurice Jarre score to the gritty Paul Newman thriller The Mackintosh Man.

The Challenge From La-La Land Records

La-La Land Records reveal their dynamic front cover art for their re-issue of one of Jerry Goldsmith's finest action thriller scores. The Challenge was first released by Prometheus back in 2000 but the disc is long out of print. On March 26th La-La Land will present a re-mastered source plus the film version of the end credit, slightly different from the album version heard on the Prometheus CD. La-La Land include this version as a bonus. Also, it has been noted by fans this new CD has a version of the Wrong Sword with the mixing bowls barely audible. This new presentation is limited to 3000 copies too and may prove just as popular. Order from La-La Land Records March 26th.

Update: La-La Land have removed this item for sale and are to replace this disc in May due to fan complaints about the version of The Wrong Sword on their CD. Hopefully they will also address the tape noise found at the end of one cue and a wrong credit on the booklet as well. Look out for announcements from La-La Land Records.

Shock Treatment And Fate Is The Hunter From Intrada

Just when you think that a score is lost, damaged or only survives in mono you get a surprise like this from Intrada. Two vintage Goldsmith scores from 1964 are released complete and in stereo, save a couple of cues from one score.

Of course both scores featured as part of Varese's epic limited edition box set Jerry Goldsmith At 20th Century Fox. But they could only include mono selections from Shock Treatment and what was thought to be the only surviving cues from Fate Is The Hunter.

Shock Treatment is a rarely seen thriller involving a Private Investigator who masquerades as patient in an insane asylum, suffering the treatment, while looking to find out the whereabouts of some $1 million in stolen loot from a committed psychotic.

Goldsmith provided one of his most unsettling and suspenseful early works with a few sign posts to some of his trademarks that would come to the fore in classics like The Planet Of The Apes.

Fate Is The Hunter revolves around the aftermath of a commercial airliner crash and the investigation to find out if it was pilot error or the newly designed plane.

Goldsmith delivered one of his shortest scores but makes a massive impact with a heartfelt and hugely memorable theme. It's style looks back to the golden age of film scoring but with the Goldsmith flare that fans came to love.

More Goldsmith Coming From Intrada!!!

It's only the end of February and Intrada has already released two Jerry Goldsmith CDs. But in a surprise posting at their forum they reveal more are on the way in the coming weeks. We are told between 5 and 6 Goldsmith releases, which are a mix of re-issues and premieres. Wow! Keep an eye on Intrada as we get into March for more.

La-La Land Re-issue The Challenge

La-La Land Records has announced The Challenge will be re-issued on March 26th. They've revealed they do have an alternate end credit and one bonus cue to add to the original 60 minute running time.

Jerry Goldsmith delivered a thrilling action thriller score for John Frankenheimer's poorly received, yet very enjoyable, 1982 Samurai actioner involving an American caught between two feuding Japanese clans seeking a rare Samurai sword. The Prometheus disc, released back in 2000, is of course long out of print and this new presentation will be very welcome to those who missed it and current owners of that disc.

Intrada Release Gladiator!

Intrada has announced a CD release of Jerry Goldsmith's unused score to the 1992 boxing drama Gladiator, directed by Rowdy Herrington. The score was eventually replaced by an ominous synth score from Terminator composer Brad Fiedel.

Goldsmith's original score was a throw back to his 80's synth/orchestral works and had a Hoosiers and Rent A Cop vibe going on. The score features a wonderfully energetic and infectious fighting theme as well as funky urban rhythms and a warm love theme. It was never clear why the makers dropped the score after clearly signing off on it and allowing it to be recorded, but no matter as now Goldsmith fans can add another of the composer's previously unreleased works to their collection.

Poltergeist On Limited Edition Double LP!

Jerry Goldsmith's masterful score to the 1982 Steven Spielberg production Poltergeist, directed by Tobe Hooper, comes to a special limited edition gatefold two disc LP. The content is the complete score as per the original Rhino CD and recent FSM CD; though the latter included the album tracks as a bonus and a new mastering of the powerful Goldsmith score.

In an age of digital downloads its surprising to see this classic Jerry Goldsmith score return to the format it started life as. But Vinyl still has a following and purists still maintain the sound from an LP is far superior to CD or download. Well now is your chance to discover the score in all its glory in 180 gram black vinyl.

The set includes a new mastering of the score, specially designed for the analogue format, and features unique and quite frankly bizarre artwork that not everyone will be thrilled by. Vinyl fans can order from Mondo direct. Keep a check on their site for the official announcement.

In Like Flint Blu-ray From Twilight Time

The Blu-ray release of In Like Flint has been announced by Twilight Time for release on February 12th. Following on from their successful Our Man Flint Blu-ray in December we now have the sequel to the tongue in cheek Bond spoof, which features Jerry Goldsmith's complete score isolated in stereo. The disc also includes the short Jerry Goldsmith featurette The Musician's Magician as well as audio commentary and several Flint themed featurettes.

Congo Complete Score From Intrada!

A new year surprise from Intrada in the form of the complete score to Congo. The original album ran just over 30 minutes and although it featured the score's main highlights was missing nearly 30 minutes more of music.

Intrada now allow Goldsmith fans the chance to get their hands on some extra Goldsmith action with this new edition of the score. The movie may not have been the adventure it perhaps could have been but Jerry Goldsmith provided a stellar adventure score with a memorable main theme that was developed into an enjoyable vocal arrangement for the opening and closing of the film. Add Bruce Botnick's stunning recording and you have a great start to 2013 for Jerry Goldsmith fans.
