King Solomon's Mines Re-issue

Quartet Records has released another CD version of Jerry Goldsmith's 1985 action adventure score. This is the 4th CD incarnation of this exciting Goldsmith score. All previous editions had something missing or a minor issue. This one is also a 2 CD set with the complete soundtrack on disc 1 and album order tracks on disc 2. Twilight Time Blu-ray releases

Twilight Time has released their new Blu-ray of the acclaimed 1983 movie Under Fire, featuring one of the composer's finest works and often critically acclaimed. As with all Twilight titles the film sports an isolated score track and it was hoped this meant they had found the missing film soundtrack arrangements of a number of cues on and not on the original album. Sadly the missing action sequence was not found and is heard here with sound effects. The disc also features a commentary with input from Bruce Botnick, who recorded the score. As well as music editor Ken Hall.

They have also issued the 1993 US remake of the bleak kidnap thriller The Vanishing. This features the Jerry Goldsmith score in isolated form for those who don't have the Varese CD Club release of this soundtrack.

Both movies feature a good selection of additional features for fans of the films and all packaged to the high quality Twilight Time standards.

The disc is limited to 1500 copies and is available from
Buysoundtrax from November 2nd.

Justine DVD R2 - Wide Screen Version!

Justine, a rarely seen 1969 film scored by Jerry Goldsmith comes to DVD in wide screen, although the packaging says 4:3. Note this is the UK Region 2 version as the US version is in 4:3, for some odd reason. Image is not re-mastered and nothing overly special but absolutely fine to watch and the grey wide screen bars don't distract too much. Sound is mono but clear and music is prominent. A Great opportunity to see this exotic middle eastern drama from JG's early career, which we have listened to as a soundtrack album but many have not seen the film for.

Flint Score Albums From Intrada!

Intrada announce both Our Man Flint and In Like Flint soundtrack albums on one CD! These are the original score albums released back in 1966 and 1967 respectively and featured re-recorded highlights of the scores conducted by the composer. The recordings are not to be confused with the 1998 Varese Sarabande CD which featured surviving tracks from the original film soundtracks for both films.

Intrada reveal the masters for the albums have only recently been discovered and are in perfect condition revealing a stunning stereo sound. These albums for many are superior in performance and arrangement to the film soundtracks and the selections make for a superb listen.

Jerry Goldsmith clearly had a lot of fun with these tongue in cheek Bond parodies and the films proved surprisingly popular at the time. Goldsmith brings 60s pop, easy listening, jazz and full orchestral scoring to the party with great success.

Rio Conchos Soundtrack In Stereo

Kritzerland has announced a limited edition release of the original soundtrack to Rio Conchos, for the most part now in stereo! The previous release by FSM back in 2000 was mono with a handful of surviving stereo cues included as a bonus. It now seems modern technology has allowed Mike Matessino to restore the majority of the score in stereo, save a couple of short cues. The FSM CD is also out of print so this one should prove popular with fans. The disc is limited to 1200 copies.

Blu-ray News Roundup

Over the last few months a number of films scored by Jerry Goldsmith have come to the Blu-ray format for either the very first time or as improved versions. Only one title - The Burbs' features some actual Goldsmith extras but it is worth spotlighting the other titles for Goldsmith fans who collect the movies he's scored on the HD format.

First up is UK company Arrow Video's The Burbs'. This release features a generous selection of extras including commentaries and documentaries as well as unseen footage. For Goldsmith fans this release has an isolated score and FX track and a collectors booklet that has a feature on the collaborations between Joe Dante and Jerry Goldsmith.

Shout Factory has released collector editions of both The Shadow and Leviathan. Both titles have a good selection of extras but no specific Goldsmith feature.

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has released the Charles Bronson western adventure Breakheart Pass. No significant extras but both picture and mono soundtrack look and sound superb. They've also released the exciting Michael Crichton Victorian adventure The Great Train Robbery. Again no significant extras but picture and sound impress.

Finally Network British Film has released the exciting Peter Hyams thriller Capricorn One, which has a very polished image indeed but sadly no extras. As well as the gritty Sean Connery hostage thriller Ransom. This UK release looks stunning and is a massive improvement over the US Blu-ray of this film (issued as The Terrorists). Also, the UK version has the slightly longer Sky Chaser sequence that was cut off in the US version. No extras to talk about here sadly but Goldsmith's music sounds as loud and powerful as ever and allows fans to hear a number of missing cues left off the odd original album. Goldsmith is name checked on the back cover notes.

And finally 20th Century Fox will issue a 35th Anniversary Blu-ray set of Alien. The extras are basically the same as the last Blu-ray box set version with the isolated scores for both the intended score as well as the theatrical butcher job as well the docs featuring Jerry Goldsmith. The set is due October 7th.

Deep Rising Due From Intrada!

Intrada announce they will release a complete score release of Jerry Goldsmith's exciting action packed score for the 1998 Stephen Sommer's seaborne actioner Deep Rising. The original CD release from Hollywood Records was a tight 30 plus minutes produced by the composer. The new disc doubles the playing time to well over 60 minutes!

Deep Rising was a surprising choice by Goldsmith considering similarities with the derided Leviathan assignment. But Sommer's movie turned out to be a lot of fun with tongue in cheek dialogue, exciting action sequences and gory full on effects. Goldsmith responded with a full throttle orchestral action score augmented with pulse pounding synth percussion. CD is due Tuesday 10th June.

Under Fire Blu-ray From Twilight Time

Twilight Time announce they will release a Blu-ray of Under Fire in October. The specialist label endeavours to include an isolated score track on all their releases and fans immediately wondered if they would get to hear the film edit of the soundtrack. The FSM Under Fire CD soundtrack release from 2008 explained they could not find the original tapes used for the film soundtrack. But Twilight Time's Nick Redman confirms they have the tapes! Assuming these are in good condition and in stereo lets hope this paves the way for a new soundtrack CD as well.

Goldsmith's stunning and critically acclaimed score for Under Fire sounded significantly different in the film compared to the popular soundtrack album. Some fans questioned if the album was a re-recording. But it wasn't, though clearly a significant amount of editing and mixing went on to transform the score for album.

Night Crossing Re-issue From Intrada

One of Intrada's most important early soundtrack releases. At the time a hugely ambitious project to go after, which involved negotiating with the mighty Walt Disney company long before the relationship they now have. The first disc and LP proved a very popular release amongst Goldsmith fans and was a jaw dropping release for many fans who thought this music would never be available. It was later followed up with an improved sounding second edition utilising the original master tapes for the first time and including a little more music, namely the longer percussion prologue. Both these versions are long out of print so it is a welcome third appearance for this stunning 80's Goldsmith adventure score.

To entice those who have the earlier version this new disc features a couple of alternates and a Goldsmith composed source piece. As well as being re-mastered again for even more improved sound. Order from Intrada today!

Dennis The Menace Expanded Score

La-La Land Records announce Jerry Goldsmith's lively orchestral score from the 1994 comedy Dennis the Menace. Also known as Dennis. The original Big Screen CD release included a generous amount of score from the film but has long been out of print. La-La Land's release expands on the score and is probably complete and is of course re-mastered. Though the original recording sounded pretty stunning.

Jerry Goldsmith wrote a massive orchestral comedy score with a rousing main theme for the mischievous title character along with a humorous howling motif for the put upon next door neighbour Mr Wilson. The score is chock full of fun at every turn and is a rare opportunity to hear the composer writing broad comedy music, probably not heard since Take Her She's Mine!

CD available from 22nd April. Order from La-La Land Records!

Psycho II Complete Score From Intrada!

Intrada make a surprise announcement with a complete score CD release of Jerry Goldsmith's 1982 score to the Psycho sequel! The original LP and later Varese CD re-issue of the music have been long out of print and only featured a short 30 minute edited selection. Intrada present the complete score, plus alternates and source music conducted by the composer!

The idea of a sequel to the classic movie Psycho seemed a crazy idea at the time and writing a new score in the shadow of the Herrmann classic seemed an unenviable task to say the least. But against all odds the movie and music turned out to be a major success. The movie even went on to spawn further sequels!

The story of Norman Bates being released from prison and taking back the keys of the Bates Motel proved intriguing and Jerry Goldsmith took a unique approach to the film's music. Instead of making Norman terrifying Goldsmith anchored his score with a beautiful and rather melancholy theme. The piece encouraged the audience to sympathise with a character turned mad by an evil guardian. Of course as the story unfolds things get darker and Goldsmith delivers eerie suspense and moments of action too.

The Omen LP From Mondo

The Mondo label, who released Poltergeist last year on LP with unique artwork, has announced another Goldsmith title. This time the classic score to The Omen. As before the selling point is completely new and rather odd artwork, bearing no resemblance to the movie campaign art whatsoever. This one by Phantom City Creative focuses on the cemetery sequence and the reveal of the contents of the two graves. The music content appears to be the original album rather than the deluxe expansion or the full score. As before the LP is 180 gram.

The Sum Of All Fears Expanded

More Goldsmith from La-La Land in March! This time an expanded release for one of the composer's last projects. The Sum Of All Fears featured Ben Affleck as a younger version of Tom Clancy's CIA analyst Jack Ryan. The film was a sombre political thriller mixed with chilling thrills as the US and Russia stand off preparing for WWIII after a Neo Nazi group smuggle and detonate a nuclear device on US soil making it look like the Russians.

Jerry Goldsmith was known especially for his action thriller scores in a military setting and fans were salivating at the prospect but the film was not the actioner some may have wished for. And Goldsmith related to it with a slow burner of a score with an emotional centre highlighted by a gorgeous theme. The standout moment remains the operatic opener as well as the chilling and ultra tense clear the stadium.

La-La Land Records present their limited edition 3000 copy release March 11th.

Alien Score Adapted For New Video Game

Jerry Goldsmith's acclaimed music for Alien has been adapted for a new next generation video game for the Alien franchise. Currently known as Alien Isolation it involves Ripley's daughter investigating her Mother's disappearance and coming in contact with a lone Zenomorph. The makers have licensed the original Goldsmith score from Fox and re-recorded it with a London based orchestra. However, don't expect to hear the score verbatim as per the soundtrack album. It sounds like they have heavily adapted it and thrown in new music to work for the game. Still Goldsmith fans who are gamers will no doubt be interested.

The List Of Adrian Messenger From Varese!

10th of February 2014 would have been Jerry Goldsmith's 85th Birthday. But the memory of this remarkable composer lives on through his musical legacy and fans continue to savour and discover his wonderful music.

Varese Sarabande's CD Club has announced a special CD release to remember the composer on the occasion of his Birthday with the premier release of his score to The List Of Adrian Messenger. This score has been much sort after and fans have been waiting to hear this news for many, many years. The score, based on samples on the Varese site, is presented in very clean mono.

The film was an enjoyable mix of crime thriller, humour and thrills. Goldsmith's jaunty tango dominates the score but the bizarre characters that pop-up throughout the story afforded the composer to develop additional themes for each. The fox hunt sequences stands out though and Goldsmith impresses with an exciting Irish themed set piece. The finale involving the demise of Kirk Douglas' character was arranged by friend and fellow composer Morton Stevens as Goldsmith was out of time and had to move on to another assignment.

Limited to 3000 copies. Order today from Varese!

Tadlow Planned The Blue Max Re-recording!

If you are not tired of The Blue Max news then we can add to the Blu-ray and the original soundtrack release news that Tadlow are planning a re-record of the score too! Leigh Philips who did a sterling job with reconstructing The Salamander has done the work and James Fitzpatrick told fans at FSM he was about to re-record with the Prague Philharmonic but is now putting the project on hold after hearing the news of La-La Land Records' 2 CD release of the original soundtrack.

The Blue Max 2 CD Re-issue From La-La Land!

After Twilight's Blu-ray of the film we now have a re-issue of the score from La-La Land Records! The big surprise is this is a 2 CD set. All previous incarnations have fitted on a single disc. The last release from Intrada was said to be complete. La-La reveal their set will be the full score, plus album presentation and source music, some previously unreleased.

Jerry Goldsmith's early epic remains a stunning orchestral spectacular and featured the first collaboration with the great National Philharmonic Orchestra. The sessions famously used a 100 players at the behest of the director for certain cues.

Look out for more details from La-La Land nearer the 25th of February release date.

The Blue Max Blu-ray From Twilight Time

Specialist film label Twilight Time will release a Blu-ray of the 1966 war movie The Blue Max on February 11th. As expected the disc will include Jerry Goldsmith's score isolated. The score will play out over two tracks featuring the film soundtrack on one and alternates on the other. As usual the disc is limited to 3000 units.

More Goldsmith From Kritzerland Due

Bruce Kimmel, owner of the Kritzerland label, has revealed he has another Goldsmith title for fans. The title has been delayed and is not due for several months though. Watch this space for more news.
