The Great Train Robbery - 2 CD Quartet Re-issue

Quartet Records has announced a limited edition 2 CD presentation of Jerry Goldsmith's much loved score for the Victorian period crime caper The Great Train Robbery. Jerry Goldsmith's wonderful theme dominates the score and gets stunning workouts along with measured and elegant arrangements for the lavish period setting.

Intrada released a 2 CD presentation back in 2011. That set has long been out of print. Predominantly this is the same release and no extra new music is present. But Quartet have presented the film versions of various cues by re-editing the original recording to match the selected takes used in the film on disc one with alternates and source music following and the album on the second disc. The presentation features all new high res transfers of the original Eric Tomlinson stereo mix. The set is rounded out by detailed booklet notes discussing the film and score. Limited to 1000 copies.

Air Force One - Deluxe Edition 2 CD Set!

Varese Sarabande's CD Club announce a limited edition 2 CD set of Jerry Goldsmith's action thriller score to the 1997 Harrison Ford film Air Force One. The score was originally released back in the day but only as a 30 minute album missing a great deal of the exciting score. The score also featured additional music by Joel McNeely due to the limited amount of time Goldsmith had to write a replacement for after Randy Newman's music was rejected.

This 2 CD set is something Goldsmith fans have been crying out for going back to the original release. It has taken a long time but finally the wait is over. Limited to 4000 copies.

Planet Of The Apes 5 CD Set - Remixed and Re-mastered!

La-La Land Records and Varese Sarabande present a 5 CD set of all of the Planet Of The Apes movie scores now with restored and re-mastered sound utilising the studio vault elements. In the case of Jerry Goldsmith's classic score for the first film it now has the missing overlays and sweeteners restored as well. The album content is also included as some cues differ from the film presentation. Both Goldsmith scores feature as individual CDs in the set as well.

The impressive set, which celebrates La-La Land Records' 500th release, is presented in a deluxe slip case, with new booklet notes and is produced by restoration expert Mike Matessino. The late, much missed Nick Redman is credited as executive producer.

Link Special Edition Blu-ray

Specialist movie label Kino Lorber has released a Blu-ray of Link in a new 4K restoration with a handful extras including what is labelled as a demo of Jerry Goldsmith's Link theme. The extra is audio only and is said to be more of an alternate take as it features orchestra. Quality is nothing special.

Worth noting that a downside with this release is that it has been mastered with a mono soundtrack by accident. The earlier DVD release had a stereo track.

Raggedy Man Encore Edition From Varese

Varese Sarabande has announced a long overdue re-issue for one of the label's early editions in their CD Club series. Amazingly Raggedy Man was first released in 1991 and fans who missed it, and newer fans, have been hoping for this for a very long time. The disc features alternate cover artwork but I am not sure if it has been re-mastered and therefore sounds any different from the original version. It is limited to just 1000 copies so don't delay if you missed it first time round. Jerry Goldsmith's gentle score features a warm main theme as well as some jarring effects for the mysterious Raggedy Man that is never far away from Sissy Spacek's single mother. The Kite sequence in particular stands out as another example of how Jerry Goldsmith created majestic music for the wonder of flight.

Archer And Improved Warning Shot CD!

La-La Land Records has announced its February batch and they have the first Goldsmith CD of 2019! Firstly a premiere in the form of the pilot episode score (Shades of Blue, actually episode 4) to the short lived TV show Archer starring Brian Keith as Ross Macdonald's Private Investigator. This is a rare and unexpected find that should get hard core Goldsmith fans very excited.

Secondly is a newly sourced presentation of Warning Shot. La-La Land released this score back in 2012 but the source was mostly from the mono music stem and did feature some minor dialogue bleed. No details on this new source are available at this time but this likeable Jazz score will benefit hugely from improved sound.

The CD will be available on the 19th February from the La-La Land Records website. Limited to 1500 copies.

L.A. Confidential Vinyl Release

The Maestro - New Film About Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco

A new film titled The Maestro (December 2018) about Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco will feature a cast that play students, film makers and composers of the time. Actor John White is listed as playing none other than Jerry Goldsmith! Note the actor is only briefly seen at the beginning.

Tedesco was a famed Italian composer who emigrated to the US in 1939 and became a film composer at MGM but he is often best known for his tutoring of some Hollywood's most popular composers that include John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. The story involves a budding film composer's experiences studying with the infamous teacher. The film stars Xander Berkeley as Tedesco.

Soundtrack Producer Nick Redman Has Passed Away

Incredibly sad news to report that one of the leading lights in the world of film music restoration and soundtrack production has passed away at the age of 63 after a courageous two year battle against cancer on Thursday 17th January.

His contribution to film music should not be underestimated and soundtrack fans, especially Jerry Goldsmith fans, are indebted to him for his incredibly hard work behind the scenes from opening doors with studios and accessing their archives, to work on restoring their scores and making them commercially available to passionate film music fans around the world. The genuine love and attention that went into all his projects are now part of film music history and releases bearing his name should be treasured.

Along with soundtracks Nick Redman's Twilight Time Blu-ray company has been responsible for releasing restored presentations of movies that are often overlooked featuring newly commissioned interviews and the inclusion of isolated scores. Nick was also a writer and documentary film maker - nominated for an Academy award for his tribute to Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch - An Album in Montage. He also produced documentaries on the making of The Searchers and a further documentary on John Ford. He also produced soundtracks and wrote about his favourite composer Jerry Fielding regularly. I never knew Nick but like many fans got to know him a little bit and message him on social media. A very sad time for film music but we can celebrate his contribution by picking up and playing a Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack produced by Nick Redman!

Condolences to his family and friends.

For western readers this very exciting and gratifying composers as great as Jerry Goldsmith and Elmer Bernstein are celebrated across the world perhaps in places some would not expect. Music, thankfully, is a universal and a common language.
