The Prize

60’s Goldsmith cool and a glorious homage to Hitchcock for an infectious spy themed conspiracy thriller score. The composer delivers a sumptuous blend of thrills, spills, elegance and even broad comedy, all shinning through a beautifully dry orchestral stereo source. Goldsmith wrestles an elaborate symphonic palette, charged with a varied percussion section and requisite low end piano for the film’s cold war espionage and suspense. While chases ensue, villains are unmasked and romance blossoms, Goldsmith provides for with nervous strings, Strav Violins and commanding brass statements via light lounge Jazz interludes. The Prize is a rare glimpse at Goldsmith on the up at a key moment in his career as he reinforced his position on the ‘A’ list. Marvellous!

An expansive FSM CD with bonus music from the original MGM LP featuring Goldsmith’s re-recorded four tracks as well as the additional source music from the film. Add to this the usual thorough booklet notes, cool production values and FSM have produced yet another stunning Jerry Goldsmith release.

Expanded review to follow.
