Prometheus Announce New King Solomon's Mines CD

Coming in under the radar and without much fanfare is another Jerry Goldsmith CD re-issue. This time it's King Solomon's Mines with a small amount of extra source music and an alternate edit of the theme all with improved sound. Producer Ford Thaxton has revealed that a mistake was made when originally editing and mastering the score (at 48k instead of 44.1) which has been corrected here and gives the score better pitch.

Ultimate Flint Collection And The Chairman DVDs

Fox has now released the 3 disc special edition DVD set of Our Man Flint And In Like Flint with a third disc devoted to extras. As mentioned on this site earlier this year the features include a look at Jerry Goldsmith's contribution to the films with interviews with Joel and Carrie Goldsmith.

Also released on DVD for the first time is The Chairman with a handful of extras. Commentaries, alternate versions of a couple of sequences, plus an unusual cut version of the film that focuses on extended or alternate scenes. The film is presented in stereo and is in Wide Screen.

Runaway Deluxe Edition From Varese CD Club - But Sold Out!

Varese Sarabande's CD Club has announced a limited edition release of Jerry Goldsmith's first all electronic score for the sci-fi thriller Runaway. The score was released by Varese back in 1985 but has long since been deleted. This 2000 disc release features additional cues not featured on the original release. Unfortunately it sold out within a day! When will these labels learn to be a bit more generous with their quantities.

Illustrated Man Comes To DVD

Warner Brothers are to release The Illustrated Man on DVD for the first time. The film is a pretty weak adaptation of Bradbury's book and was disliked intensely by the writer. Of course the score has been properly preserved by Film Score Monthly already but for those who want to see what Goldsmith was scoring to then pick up this oddity in December.

Also released is a DVD re-issue of the fairly abysmal Supergirl to coincide with Warner Brothers' year long celebration of all things Superman. Yet again Goldsmith's contribution is the best thing about the film. The DVD is already available in Europe and is released in the US in November.

Intrada Announce New 2 CD Presentation of Inchon But Has Sold Out In One Day!

Ordinarily a re-issue of a minor Jerry Goldsmith score would not garner a great deal of interest, but a new and improved Inchon release is strangely exciting. Inchon has always been plagued with a poor sound, even the hugely improved 1988 Intrada release was left wanting. But this new two disc set features the score not only in its completely unedited form but with improved sound. The set also includes the original album presentation from the newly discovered masters. Limited to 1500 copies but sold out within a day!

Beltrami's Omen Tribute To Goldsmith

Marco Beltrami with Jerry GoldsmithAs most fans know Marco Beltrami, a Jerry Goldsmith fan and in some ways a Goldsmith protégé has written a new score to the remake of The Omen. As a tribute to the late great composer Beltrami has utilised some of the famous Latin text, as well as adapting some of Jerry Goldsmith's themes from the Oscar winning score for what I assume is the end credit. Here Beltrami opens with a startling rendition of Ave Satani before briefly recalling the chaotic Mrs Baylock fight, then closing with the melancholy love theme.

Obscure Movies with Jerry Goldsmith Scores Come To DVD

Over the last couple of months a number of rather obscure movies scored by Jerry Goldsmith have been announced for release on DVD. Movies that rarely appear on TV can now be collected by Jerry Goldsmith fans for the first time. Anchor Bay have already released Take A Hard Ride in wide screen with trailer. On the 17th of April Eureka UK will release The Other, sadly full screen but with a trailer and a PDF file of the Jerry Goldsmith score. Though conflicting reports say this may just be a cue listing. Magic will be released on the 25th of April by Dark Sky Studios in wide screen with a selection of extras including a featurette and interviews. Finally Anchor Bay have listed Damnation Alley for release on DVD sometime in 2006. There is mention of extras too!

Incidentally 20th Century Fox have re-released a number of Goldsmith scored movies on their budget range titled Studio Classics. These include The Blue Max, Bandolero!, The Sand Pebbles, Morituri and Von Ryan's Express. All are presented in wide screen. And Disney recently released Night Crossing, sadly full screen but with Goldsmith's score dominating proceedings in surround sound.

Breakheart Pass From La-La Land Records

The La-La Land Records website has announced that they will be releasing the first official CD of Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack to Breakheart Pass in April! The score first appeared as a bootleg LP with only a small portion of the score back in the early 80's. Then in the early 90's an official looking promotional disc appeared, featuring the complete score in a clean mono sound but with very basic artwork. La La's release will sadly be monophonic too but it is a very welcome release for Jerry Goldsmith fans.

Jerry Goldsmith Biography Update

As most of you know Carrie Goldsmith began the mammoth task of writing a biography about her father shortly before his untimely death in 2004. Carrie is now in the final stages of her first draft and hopes to have a completed version of the book at the end of January.

Carrie plans to setup a special website to promote her book and post excerpts from it for fans to get a taste of what is to come. The site should be active within about 8 weeks and I will of course post details as soon as I have them.

I am sure all Jerry Goldsmith fans will want to wish her luck in these final stages of what will no doubt be a fascinating book.
